Septic-to-sewer conversions, reclaimed water upgrades, advanced septic systems. This is the biggest single lever on the nitrogen that feeds harmful algae blooms.
$213M — Muck Removal (38%)
Dredging accumulated muck plus nutrient stripping. Muck smothers seagrass beds and fuels the next bloom. Removal is expensive but permanent.
$86.6M — Stormwater & Vegetation (16%)
Baffle boxes, treatment retrofits, invasive aquatic vegetation harvesting. Cuts pollution at the drain, before it reaches the water.
$11M — Habitat Restoration (2%)
Oyster reefs, living shorelines, clam plantings, mangrove restoration. The living infrastructure that filters, stabilizes shorelines, and buffers storms.

Modeled nitrogen load reduction
The cumulative modeled nitrogen load reduction from SOIRL-funded projects since 2016 is on the order of a million pounds. These are engineering-modeled estimates from project reports (septic conversions, wastewater upgrades, muck removal), not direct in-water measurements of nitrogen flux.
